If you have done your research on Cairns and made a list of must do places to visit, it’s likely you will have come across Fairy Falls. Often called a hidden gem or a local secret, Fairy Falls is now a popular waterfall and one of the best in Cairns. Less than 30 minutes from Cairns City, Fairy Falls is also one of the most easily accessible waterfalls in the region.
Located in Redlynch Valley, you can get to Fairy Falls by putting ‘Crystal Cascades’ into Google Maps (or click here for the exact location).
There is a large carpark at Crystal Cascades. After you’ve parked your car, face the main entrance to Crystal Cascades (clearly marked) and head to your left. Walk to the end of the carpark and you will see a clear trail walking into the rainforest.
Follow this trail through the rainforest until it reaches the waters edge. When you get here, keep walking forward, rock hopping as necessary. This is where some people get lost and head towards the left and up a steep trail. Make sure you stick close to the water edge and you’ll be fine, it’s very easy to find. You will see the waterfall ahead of you as you get closer.
The walk from Crystal Cascades carpark to this waterfall takes less than 10 minutes, and while the end involves rock hopping, most people can access it relatively easily (unfortunately, I wouldn’t visit if you have mobility issues).
Fairy Falls is still not included in tourist bus itineraries and therefore it is likely that you will have this waterfall either to yourself, shared with a few locals or the travellers who have done some research.
While you’re here, it’s also worth checking out Crystal Cascades. A highly popular swimming hole with both locals and on the tourist trail. Despite it’s popularity, it’s easy to find a spot to enjoy the cascades as there are many different swimming spots along the way.
