Booking a hire car can be a slightly overwhelming process. From choosing what features you want, what insurance you need and whether or not to do unlimited kilometres or stick with the set amount. In addition to all the choices you need to make about your hire car, there is just so much choice out there – with hundreds and thousands of car hire companies all trying to win your choice and business.
Discover Cars is an online car hire comparison and booking website, which allows you to filter what you do and don’t want with your hire car, while comparing the best options available and the best deals out there.
I recently hired a car through the Discover Cars website, and this is how it went:
What you get with Discover Cars
The benefit of booking your car hire through Discover Cars is more than just being able to compare the best car hire companies. You also get free cancellation (up to 48 hours before local pick up time!) and there are no hidden fees involved in using them – you’ll know once you’ve gone through the process that what you see in front of you, is what you’ll get.
Where does Discover Cars operate?
The benefit of hiring a car through Discover Cars is that they are available in a number of countries – over 145 different countries and over 10,000 different locations within them. It means that Discover Cars can be your go-to website for comparing hire cars whenever you travel or need a hire car locally.

The comparison and booking process
The Discover Cars comparison and booking website is easy to use. You can choose your currency and language at the top, choose your location, dates you need it for and search.
Once you’ve filled in the basic details you’re after, Discover Cars will search and load available options for you. You can take a quick glance at the top of the page for a summary of the prices on offer for different car sizes:
You can then look at each hire company in turn as you scroll down the Discover Cars page. It is automatically set to sort by ‘recommended’, but you can change that to ‘price’ and ‘supplier rating’ depending on your preference. You can also filter the hire car options you see on screen by specification, number of seats, extras, payment types, supplier rating, special deals, the list goes on.
Once you’ve chosen your hire car of choice, you’ll be able to choose any additional extras like insurance (my top tip for any car hire is make sure you have third party insurance at the very least – you don’t want to be driving and hit a Ferrari or, like, any type of car). When I booked my car hire company the option to add insurance was actually once I arrived at the hire car company office for pick up so just take a look at whether you purchase extra insurance now or later.
Here is also your chance while making your booking on Discover Cars to add on any extra offers that your hire car company might have – like baby seats, GPS and additional drivers.
Once you’ve submitted your details, you can press Book Now and be ready to go. Don’t forget that Discover Cars bookings come with 48 hour cancellation – that is, if you book your car but want to cancel 48 hours before pick up (in the pick up location’s time zone) you can do so for free.
What should you look for when comparing rental cars?
Discover Cars allows you to compare car hire companies – but what exactly should you be looking for? In addition to the cost (duh), keep your eyes out on the reviews and rental conditions from each car hire company. The reviews are written by Discover Cars previous customers once they’ve completed a car hire booking and they recommend looking for car hire companies with reviews over 8/10.
In addition, before booking any car hire company, check out their rental conditions to make sure that what the car hire company is offering is what is best for you. You’ll be able to see this in the bottom left corner of each hire car option on Discover Cars.
My experience with Discover Cars
I had a fantastic experience booking with Discover Cars. While normally I would hire a car for a holiday or travel in another country, this time I needed a hire car to help facilitate my move from Cairns to Brisbane. I went with East Coast Car Rentals, who had a free airport pick-up (which even came with a little pep talk when I told the lady picking me up that I had a big few days of house inspections ahead of me). Check in was straight forward, easy and I was on the road in no time. The car I chose was modern and easy to drive, especially because I had to get used to Brisbane’s roads again.
Once I had returned my car hire, I received an email from Discover Cars asking me to rate my experience. This is so helpful as I read reviews whenever I book or buy something – especially travel related, and you can help future people make sure they choose a reputable and worthwhile car hire company as well.
